Why do the police allow Muslims to shout abuse at our returning soldiers?

When the Royal Anglian regiment returned today and marched through the streets there were about 100 mainly Muslim men shouting abuse at them. The police singled them out and separated them but why allow them at all? Can I go and scream abuse at descending Muslims going in/out of a mosque?
