What breed of bunny is it?

My friend has a snake and this rabbit unfourtenly was suppose to be lunch but luckly the rabbit and snake became friends! The rabbit is pretty friendly for snake food but I want to know what type of rabbit it is so I can do research he is mostly black but fades to grey at his lower half (he or she?) he has thick soft velvety fur and has straight up ears and is a little chubby can you give me some suggestions on what breed he could be? I think he may be New Zealand from what I have been able to find (My friend is 11 I am 12 I am just really in to animals and zoology so I am doing alot of research)
